A comparison of misinformation and disinformation The internet has brought the information age where anyone has access to everything. This can be both good and bad. Everyone has made the mistake of believing something online and then finding out it is untrue. An Ofcom 2022 report showed that while 60% think they can tell fact from fiction, in fact they cannot. It is more than just knowing what fake news is. We also need to be able to separate misinformation from disinformation and the way to do that is to consider intent. Misinformation does not have any intention to deceive but it happens through mistake. Disinformation involves an intention to deceive in some way. First, misinformation. Journalists or news may make mistakes with a quote, a date, or a statistic. Science makes leaps forward. History changes as we learn more. Everyone makes mistakes in sharing incorrect information and believing it. Now, disinformation. Unlike misinformation, this is a deliberate attempt to spread wrong information. It could be incorrect headlines, biased opinions, edited images, or conspiracy theories. Successfully spreading disinformation involves using organizations that sound official, editing multimedia, and specifically targeting groups of people that you think will be most receptive to believing the disinformation. Consider the intent behind the information although the internet and social media has certainly made it a lot easier. For example, in Roman times scandals were spread to discredit one's political rivals, and in Victorian times fake medicines were touted to make a profit. Nowadays, believable disinformation can spread quickly and widely, so it is worth taking some time to evaluate what you find online, what purpose is behind it, and if it is trying to deceive.
