Long ago, deep in the Himalayas, there lived a highly-respected sage who had devoted his life to seeking knowledge and enlightenment through meditation. From time to time, he descended from his mountaintop home to collect provisions in the village and visit his family members. One day in the village, his sister expressed her distress about her teenage son. He was becoming a menace at school, starting arguments with relatives, and exhibiting deviant behavior. The sage's sister begged him to come to her home to counsel the boy. Because he had a well-earned reputation for his wise advice, she was certain he was the right person to enlist for help. So, he spent two weeks living at his sister's home. He shared meals with them and assisted with any necessary chores. However, he did not have a conversation with his nephew as his sister had requested. This caused much confusion for the boy, who knew his mother's motives for the invitation. Soon it was time for the sage to return to his home. As he began gathering his belongings, there was a knock at the door. His nephew entered and sat down beside him. The boy stared at his uncle, waiting for him to say something about changing his behavior. But when his uncle turned toward him, he saw that the old sage had tears in his eyes. The sage was crying because he could feel the boy's pain himself. He truly understood that the boy felt disconnected, lost, and unloved, and that his misbehavior was a symptom of a deep pain, not a desire to be hateful. The rest of the family thought of him as nothing more than a burden and an embarrassment. However, his uncle thought otherwise. Seeing tears in his uncle's eyes, the boy felt that someone finally understood him. He knew they were tears of empathy, not of disappointment in his rebellious behavior. On that day, the boy started to change his ways. Inspired by his uncle's compassion, he was able to stop avoiding his pain and face it, which ultimately helped him overcome it.
