Most bilingual and multilingual countries have two or more official languages, and in such countries all children might be required to learn a second language. A major factor responsible for different American dialects is geographic region. People living in different regions tend to develop variations in language use and production. English varies within each of the many countries in which it is spoken. Each language is spoken somewhat differently by different subgroups of a linguistic community. It is spoken in many countries, both as a primary language and as a second language. That English is more international in its scope than other language is well known. On the other hand, dialect is a broader concept that includes phonologic, morphologic, semantic, and pragmatic differences in verbal practices of subgroups of a community. In essence, accent is a phonologic and prosodic phenomenon. Accent is restricted to speech sound production differences and different rhythms of speech. Variations of a specific language are called its dialects, which should be distinguished from accents. Although there are exceptions, lack of political and economic power and low social status have been aspects of this minority status in many societies. Nonetheless, and regardless of the single official language, the U.S. is a multilingual society that includes bilingual and multilingual individuals. Because the majority of the population speaks English, people who speak other languages are considered the language minority. A country or society of differing cultural practices is multicultural, and practically all societies are multicultural. People who speak two languages are bilingual, and those who speak more than two languages are multilingual or polyglot. In fact, problems of speech sound production in school-age children are among the most frequently treated disorders of communication. Some people may still believe that the U.S. is a unilingual English-speaking country partly because the country has a single federal official language and because the majority of people speak only English. In fact, multiculturalism and multilingualism go together. Most countries are multilingual. They learn many of the social, economic, political, and other practices of their new homeland, but it is not true that a melting pot creates a people of a single culture, even when the circumstances force them to use a single dominant language outside the home. Historically, it has been believed that different people who immigrate to the U.S. lose much of their cultural practices and evolve into a single cultural group in this 'melting pot'. Diversity may be marked in countries with different languages or historically isolated geographic regions. Most societies are a mixture of various cultural practices. Nonetheless, most of the countries of the world are multicultural. Variations and deviations of language are context specific. The act of talking is not equally valued in all cultures. Differing family backgrounds influence the patterns of communication children acquire. Initially, children acquire their language within family structure, which is the basic cultural unit. To understand a language, its use, its diversity, and its disorders, one must understand the broader cultural context of that language. Language or verbal behaviour of people is both an aspect of societies and a mechanism to transmit cultural practices from one generation to the next.
