A common linguistic definition of language is that it is a system of symbols and codes used in communication. Without voice, communication is nonvocal and takes the form of signs and symbols. Humans have achieved this range because of their dynamic vocal mechanism. Although many species of animals can make vocal sounds, only humans are capable of making a wide range of vocal sounds that are the building blocks of oral communication. Without voice, there is no vocal communication except for whispered speech, which does not require voice. Voice is an essential element of oral communication. Language and communication are now crucial for even mudane occupational success or survival. Because it has an effect only in a social context, communication may be defined as a form of social behavior that affects the actions of each participant. Without effective communication skills, a human may survive as an organism but will have difficulty thriving as a social person. As societies have become more complex, organized, and interrelated both within and among themselves, effective communication has gained increasingly greater importance. A sophisticated form of communication has assumed such great importance in modern societies that it is essential for social survival. Unlike the animal modes of communication, most but not all forms of human languages, more accurately human verbal behaviors, are unrelated to the needs of biological survival. Oral language is spoken with words, whereas nonoral language is expressed through gestures, symbols, or both. People generally think of language as a form of spoken or written communication. We may think of language as a means of interaction and as a form of social behavior. A behavioral definition is that language is a form of social behavior, shaped and maintained by a verbal community. It may be thought of as a functional disorder, because it cannot be explained by neurological damage, muscle weakness or paralysis, or a structural problem such as a cleft palate. Language includes spoken speech, gestures, signs, and other patterns of communication. It is language that makes people so efficient at communication. It branches into several smaller arteries to supply blood to various portions of the brain. The brain is well protected to reduce the chances of external shock and trauma. Other nerves carry impulses from the brain to the muscles to make those muscles move. They go out to connect to various sense organs and muscles of the head and neck. The biological function of the tongue is to sense taste and to move food around in the mouth for better chewing and swallowing. When a person is called on to speak louder, he or she tends to inhale more air and exhale somewhat more forcefully. Most bilingual speakers tend to speak their second language in a dialect popularly described as accent. Bilingual speakers tend to mix the two languages they speak, especially in informal conversations. While in the company of similarly bilingual speakers, bilingual speakers often switch back and forth from their first language to their second language. Language or verbal behaviour of people is both an aspect of societies and a mechanism to transmit cultural practices from one generation to the next. Syntax is the arrangement of words to form meaningful sentences. The basic meaning of the word syntax is to join, to put together.
