The basic unit of oral language, the organized system of verbal communication, is speech. Speech, in turn, can be broken down into its basic units which are speech sounds. Speech sounds are used in forming syllables, which are necessary to form words. When spoken words are organized into sentences, the system of oral language is formed. The term alphabet comes from the first letter of the Greek alphabet, alpha, and the second letter, beta. For many languages, each letter of the alphabet stands for a sound. However, it is only minimally true of English, because the spoken English sounds are not faithful to the written alphabet that represents them. For instance, sounds of Spanish and some Asian languages are more true to their alphabets. The problems of an inadequate alphabet become evident when a child begins to read aloud. In oral reading, the sounds must be matched with the letters of the alphabet used to spell the words. Trouble begins here because the same sound is spelled in many different ways. There shows a few examples of varied spellings for the same sounds or phoneme.
