language learning
Speech sounds are combined to form words. Words are combined in certain order to form sentences. Competency in oral communication requires mastery in the complex and organized set of verbal skills called language. The questions of how most children easily master these skills and how some children find it an extremely difficult task to accomplish have been fascinating to investigate but challenging to answer. These stories demonstrate the difference between children in two group that those with typical language skills and those with deficient language skills. By the time they are 5 or 6 years old, most children, like Erika, will have mastered the basic structure of their language. By this time, the children have a vocabulary that serves them well and startles adults on occasion. Although they continue to learn more complex and abstract language skills, most 6-year-old children speak in grammatically complete sentences. They can take part in conversational and use language appropriately in most social situations. These are the children with normal or better than normal language skills. There also are children, like Erick, who do not fully learn the language spoke around them. Some children are silent companions of those who talk incessantly. Others say a few words but do not combine words into phrases and sentences. Some children use simpler or broken sentences. These children omit various grammatical morphemes, are not sure of word meanings, and do not always understand what they hear. They are often not sure of what to say or when to say it. They cannot take part in conversations or coherently narrate their experiences, and they fail to understand or produce such abstract elements of language as proverbs, idioms, metaphors, and similes. Because of their limited language skills, they may have deficient reading and writing skills and experience significant academic difficulties. These are the children with language disorders.
