One night, there was a five-hour jitterbug contest on campus. Lucy was a pretty good jitterbug dancer. She knew that another student, Vinny, was known as one of the best male jitterbug dancers around, and she wanted to be his partner. However, there was also another girl, Irene Marshall, who was keen to partner with Vinny as well. Vinny couldn't decide whom he should dance with, so he practiced his moves with Lucy for a few minutes. During those moments, Lucy felt a strong connection, certain that they could win if they partnered up. But then Vinny danced with Irene, and Lucy's heart sank as she watched them. She was undeniably talented! Vinny kept going back and forth, practicing with Lucy, then Irene, clearly struggling to make a decision. There were just a few minutes left before the contest started. Vinny told them he was going to the men's room, and by the time he came back, he would have made up his mind. The two girls eyed each other suspiciously. Lucy could see that Irene was an excellent dancer. Lucy was a little smaller and lighter, so Vinny could throw her around more easily, but Irene had better moves. They decided to shake hands and wish each other well, no matter what his decision was. As they were shaking hands, the music started to play. They started moving to the beat, then dancing, and both instantly had the same idea — they knew they danced better with each other than with Vinny. When Vinny returned from the men's room, Lucy informed him he was too late and that she had decided to enter the contest with Irene. Lucy and Irene put on a fantastic performance, and they won. They were the only girl-girl couple, which made them distinctive. As Lucy accepted the first prize alongside Irene, she felt a deep sense of accomplishment. It was an unforgettable night for Lucy, one that she knew she would cherish for years to come.
