UNIT 8 - READING 2 The German Education System
Tonight, 14-year-old Wolfgang is getting his tools ready. Tomorrow is his first day of training at a computer company. For the next three weeks, Wolfgang will not attend classes at his vocational high school. Instead, he will get work experience that will help him become a meister, or "master," computer technician. Anna, his ten-year-old sister, is busy studying in the next room. She goes to a different school than her brother. At her school, all of the students are planning to eventually attend university. Wolfgang and Anna live in Germany. When children enter elementary school there, they stay with the same group of students and the same teacher for four years. At the end of the fourth year, students are evaluated based upon their school records and natural abilities. They can then attend either an academic school to prepare for university or a vocational school to learn a trade. This system of education is quite different from those of Asian countries. In Japan, for example, students take competitive examinations throughout their school years. These examinations determine which junior high school, high school, and college they can attend. In Germany, on the other hand, students' futures are largely decided by the time they finish the fourth grade of elementary school. Students in Germany seem happy with the system. Many feel that the lack of competitive tests creates a less stressful environment. "I'd rather focus on something I love, like computers, than other subjects, like history and biology," says Wolfgang. The work experience he'll get at a company before he finishes high school will allow him to get a good job in the future. The German education system benefits both the individual and the country. Students are able to focus on their particular interests and natural abilities. After they graduate, they can then apply these skills in ways that earn them money while making the national economy stronger.
