UNIT 13 - READING 1 Calligraphy
Do you have artistic talent and good handwriting? If so, maybe you should consider calligraphy. Literally meaning "beautiful writing," it is the art of writing letters, characters, words and sentences in an elegant and attractive manner. The key to becoming an expert calligrapher is being able to control the rhythm and movement of your pen strokes when you write. Calligraphy is one of the more difficult art forms, as you only get one chance to write each character or letter. Each work is completed quickly and spontaneously. Most importantly, there is no going back and correcting errors. Once the artist stops writing, the work is finished. But calligraphy is far more than just a technical skill. Expert calligraphers must also be able to express specific emotions in their work. They do this not just through the meaning of the words they write, but also through their shape and form. Each strokes of the calligrapher's pen must be in harmony with the rest, resulting in a work that can create deep feelings within its viewers. There are two essential sides to modern calligraphy. On the one hand, it can be a pure art form, like painting or sculpting. In this type of calligraphy, the words themselves may or may not be readable-it is their appearance that matters. However, calligraphy can also be used as a visually pleasing way of communicating a message. This kind of functional calligraphy can most commonly be found in fancy wedding invitations and greeting cards. Surprisingly, it is used every time we send an email as well. The @ symbol, used in email addresses, is believed to have originated from calligraphy hundreds of years ago. So why not give calligraphy a try? By writing beautiful letters and characters in harmony with one another, you can create your own works of art that convey a special message to all who view them.
