The study of meaning in language is called semantics. The different units of meaning are expressed in different forms of words, phrases, and sentences. These semantic categories or semantic relations are contrasting units of meaning. Linguistic researchers of child language acquisition have categorized meanings that children seem to acquire. Accordingly, meaning is the sum total of mental images, ideas, and thoughts that language evokes in listeners or readers. One variation states that meaning is a cognitive process. Another theory states that meaning is in the concepts we talk about. This is the referent theory of meaning. Some theorists have proposed that the meaning of word is the object, person, or event to which it refers. This may be described as the content theory of meaning. A theory that is currently popular in speech-language pathology is that the meaning is the content of the structure of language. Semanticists, the specialists who study meaning, believe that meaning is the essence of language and communication. The semantic component is the meaning that words, phrases, and sentences convey. The basic meaning of the word syntax is to join, to put together. Therefore, his theory is often called the transformational generative theory of grammar. Chomsky believed that such creative transformation of sentences in the essence of language. A transformation is an operation that relates deep and surface structures and yields different forms of sentences. Underlying this surface structure is the abstract deep structure, which primarily holds the rules of sentence formation. The surface structure is the actual arrangement of words in a syntactic order. Language performance is the actual production of language. Language competence is the innate and perfect knowledge of the rules of universal grammar, which apply to all languages. The syntax of a language precludes random and meaningless word order. Language is said to be creative mostly because its elements can be arranged and rearranged in many different ways. These rules specify the ways and order in which words may be combined to form sentences in a particular language. Syntax also is a collection of rules. In the study of language, syntax is the arrangement of words to form meaningful sentences.
