voice disorder 28
The predominant component of hoarseness may be breathiness in some individuals and harshness in others. If the vocal folds approximate too loosely, breathiness will be the dominant feature. If they approximate too tightly, harshness will be dominant. Hoarseness results from irregular vocal fold vibrations. In such cases, the fundamental frequency of the speaker varies randomly. The pitch of a hoarse voice is typically low. The causes of hoarseness include all those that produce both breathiness and harshness of voice. Laryngitis is a common cause of hoarseness. Neurological diseases and abnormal growth on the vocal folds change the way they vibrate, causing hoarseness. Cranial nerve lesions, for example, may produce a hoarse voice. Such abnormal growth on the folds as nodules and polyps also are associated with hoarseness. Such behavioral patterns as habitually tensed voice also may have a hoarse quality to it. Depending on the pathology, the vocal folds may approximate less optimally, or too tightly. Treatment for hoarseness, depends on the kinds of pathology that are present in an individual. Generally, voice therapy is effective when procedures designed to reduce breathiness and harshness are combined. The emphasis in treatment may be on the dominant symptom. Resonance is the modification of sound by structures through which that sound passes. The resonating structures that lie below and above the larynx modify the laryngeal tone. Voice disorders of resonance constitute an absence of a desired resonance, inadequate resonance, or inappropriate resonance. These problems can be heard in the case of both oral and nasal resonance.
