One day when Paul was a senior in high school, he was walking home from school and noticed an elderly couple standing at the base of a very tall pine tree. They were looking up and yelling and they were obviously very upset. He thought that maybe their cat had gotten stuck in the tree, and since he had spent many of his best times as a young boy climbing trees, he went to see if he could help. At the top of the tree was a very young boy. He couldn't have been more than three or four years old. He was staying with his grandparents and, when they weren't looking, had climbed up the tree. They had already called the fire department, but Paul felt like he should at least climb up far enough so that if the little boy started to fall he might be able to catch him. When he got within a few feet of the boy, he gave Paul a very huge smile and said "Hi." Paul almost started laughing because the boy was not at all scared; in fact he looked as much at ease as a monkey on its home branch. They ended up talking for a while about how great it felt to climb trees, and as they talked, cradled in that pine tree, Paul could feel his whole body relaxing into the tree. He had this wonderful feeling that everything was just right with the world. Then the boy said, "We better go down now," and, as they climbed down the tree (Paul was very careful to keep himself close and below him), he could see that the boy was never in any real danger. He moved as though he could scramble up and down that tree a million times and never come close to slipping. As Paul walked home, he realized that that was the first time he had crawled out onto the limb of a tree in many, many years. The thought made Paul want to go back and thank that little boy.
