Katherine Johnson was born in 1918 and excelled in mathematics from an early age. She graduated from high school at the age of 14 and from college when she was just 18. In 1939, she was selected to attend graduate school at West Virginia State University and became the first ever black female student to attend the university. In 1953, Johnson was hired by NACA (which later became NASA) to become a "human computer," a worker who would perform complex mathematical calculations by hand. Although Johnson and her black colleagues did the same work as the white "human computers," they were paid less. What's more, they had to work in a separate area on NACA's western campus, as well as use separate dining and bathroom facilities. In spite of this discrimination, Johnson worked hard and stayed focused. One day, she and one of her colleagues were sent to help an all-white, all-male research team at the Guidance and Control Division. Her analytic geometry skills impressed the men so much that they forgot to send her back to the western campus! Johnson continued her outstanding work at NASA, and her remarkable skills when it came to calculating *trajectories and *plotting navigational charts made her highly respected by astronauts. When John Glenn became the first American to orbit our planet in 1962, it was also the first time NASA used computers to perform calculations. However, Glenn demanded that Johnson be there to check the computer's calculations. Otherwise, he wouldn't fly! Johnson also performed calculations for the historic 1969 Apollo 11 mission to the moon. When Apollo 13 experienced a malfunction in space the following year, she helped make sure that the astronauts returned safely to Earth. Katherine Johnson finally retired in 1986. Today, she is celebrated not only for her great contributions to mankind's exploration and understanding of outer space but also for her brave spirit of perseverance in the face of unjust discrimination.
