Scientists at Harvard University have developed tiny flying robots called RoboBees. They only weigh about 80 milligrams, and they have a wingspan of three centimeters. This makes them the world's smallest flying robots. While designing the RoboBee, the scientists were inspired by the biology and behavior of real bees. Although they are small, flying bees can perform many quick and precise maneuvers. They are very aware of their surroundings, and they can work both as individuals and together to perform complex tasks. RoboBees' wings are very thin and they flap 120 times per second, just like the wings of real bees. In addition, each wing is controlled independently, which gives RoboBees great mobility. They can even take off vertically and hover in mid-air! RoboBees can also rest on various surfaces in order to save energy. Thanks to their remarkable abilities, RoboBees could potentially be used in many different ways. One of the most interesting uses could be to *pollinate crops. As the world's bee populations are in decline, RoboBees could step in and perform this complex but essential task. They could also be used for search-and-rescue missions, for exploring dangerous areas, and much more. As amazing as RoboBees are, the team of scientists at Harvard is still working on ways to improve them. For one thing, they want RoboBees to be able to sense their own environment like real bees can. In addition, RoboBees are currently attached to a power source with tiny wires. The scientists hope to give them more freedom by building the power supply into the RoboBees themselves. With continued development, these remarkable little robots could serve many important functions in the future!
