UNIT 06 - READING 2 Henri Matisse
At the beginning of the 20th century, many artists started to move away from tradition. One of the modern art movements of this time was Fauvism, which started to develop in France in 1904. The term "Fauvism" comes from the French word fauve, which means "wild beasts." This name may have been chosen because Fauve artists were viewed as rebels during their time. Their art shocked and even angered viewers. It took something that people considered "right" and made it look "wrong." Henri Matisse was one of the founders of this movement. Along with other Fauve artists, he painted familiar forms in colors that didn't match them naturally. In other words, landscapes and portraits were painted in the "wrong" colors, which were often bright and unusual. Traditionally, artists would choose a subject and paint it using its real-life colors. However, Matisse believed that form shouldn't decide color. Instead of simply making things look like they do in reality, he used colors in his paintings to express his feelings. As he put it, "When I put a green, it is not grass." "When I put a blue, it is not the sky." The painting Open Window, Collioure is a great example of Matisse's use of color. The scene doesn't seem natural because the water is a shade of pink, not blue, and the walls are different colors. However, the colors express the excitement Matisse felt on a summer day, which he wanted to recreate. That is why Matisse didn't think there was any "right" or "wrong" when it comes to color. Like other Fauve artists, he believed that the colors an artist chooses are always right because they express the artist's creative visions.
