Traumatic brain injury is injury to the brain sustained by physical trauma or external force. It is brain injury that impairs many learned skills in surviving individuals, requiring extensive medical treatment and prolonged multidisciplinary rehabilitation services. Traumatic brain injury excludes such internal causes as strokes, tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, infections, and inherited conditions that affect brain function. Head trauma is always involved in traumatic brain injury, but the two terms are not synonymous because head trauma may or may not affect the brain. Only when the brain is injured because of trauma to the head does the term traumatic brain injury apply. Traumatic brain injury is a major, expensive, sometimes fatal, and often lifelong health and rehabilitation problem. The annual cost of caring for the individuals with traumatic brain injury, combined with the loss of productivity in the United States, may be as high as $60 billion to $70 billion a year and up to $5 million more per individual in his or her lifetime. In most cases, traumatic brain injury is a medical emergency, requiring immediate treatment. Various sources suggest that 150 to 250 persons per 100,000 sustain brain injury. This means that 1.6 million people in the United States may suffer head and brain injuries each year. Of those who sustain brain injuries, some 52,000 die of their severe injuries, 265,000 are hospitalized, and more than 70,000 may have permanent disability. The prevalence of traumatic brain injury is the highest among people in the age range of 15 to 19 years. It is more common among males than females. For every female with traumatic brain injury, there are three to five males with the same condition. Males also have a higher rate of death due to traumatic brain injury. The prevalence tapers off after age 25 years and picks up again after age 75 years. Traumatic brain injury is more common among people who live in inner cities than it is in those who live in the suburbs, and compared to Whites, it may be more common African Americans and Hispanics. In addition, as many as 3.8 million children and adults may receive concussion, a milder form of traumatic brain injury, on the school and professional playgrounds.
