speech problems associated aos
A person with apraxia of speech has difficulty positioning the articulators correctly. The person seems unsure of the movements necessary to produce a certain sequence of speech sounds. While making many errors of articulation, the person recognizes the errors and makes repeated attempts to correct them. However, each attempt often results in a different kind of mistake. Such variability of errors across trials is a significant feature of apraxia of speech. More errors are made on consonants than on vowels. The most errors are found on consonant clusters. Phonemes and words that are used more frequently are produced with greater accuracy than those that are used less frequently. The speech sounds of a word may be produced out of sequence. This illustrates the variable mistakes on repeated attempts and the frequent switching of the phonemic sequence of the target word. Complex or longer words are more difficult than are simpler or shorter words. Persons with apraxia of speech are able to produce the same words at other times, especially when it seems automatic. Their speech at times is well articulated. At the end of the session, the client who could not say California upon request remarked freely and easily. The apraxic speech may not sound normal because of the disturbed rhythm and intonation, symptoms that are included under prosodic disorders. Speech prosody may not sound normal because of the broken, dysfluent, and repetitive speech attempts. The speech may be too slow, and the client may place equal stress on all syllables in a word. Intonation of speech may be somewhat flat, and the speech may lack normal loudness. Normal rhythm and intonation are associated with speech that flows smoothly and the halting apraxic speech lacks such flow. Pure apraxia of speech is not associated with other kinds of speech or language problems. However, pure apraxia is rare. It is most frequently associated with aphasia. These individuals, then, have a language disorder and a speech disorder, both due to neurological damage.
