left, disorientation, facial
A striking feature of right hemisphere disorder is the individual's tendency to neglect the left side of their body or what is in their left visual field. Both visual and auditory stimuli on their left side do not seem to exert the typical influence on their behavior. The clients might read only the right side of a printed book, bump into things or people on their left side, copy only the right side of a drawing, fail to leave a left margin while writing, deny the existence of their paralyzed left arm or leg, comb only the right side of the head, and use only the right-side pockets of pants or jackets. While conversing with multiple individuals, those with right hemisphere disorder may completely ignore people on their left side. Auditory left neglect is less common than visual neglect, but when it is present, the individuals may not pay attention to sound coming from their left side. Impaired alternation goes hand in hand with left neglect. The individuals generally show a lack of readiness to respond to stimuli. They have difficulty giving sustained attention to a task and may fail to give selective attention. Immediately post-onset, individuals may be seriously disoriented. Spatial disorientation is a common problem that might persist for a while. For instance, individuals might be unable to find their way in their own home or may find maps meaningless. Also noted is geographic disorientation. Individuals with this problem might believe that they are in a different city or hospital than they are actually in. A few of them may exhibit reduplicative paramnesia, a belief in the existence of multiple places or persons. For instance, a woman with right hemisphere disorder believed that there are two identical hospitals in town and that she had two identical husbands at home. Facial recognition deficits, also known as prosopagnosia, include failure to recognize familiar faces. Persons may not recognize the faces of their own family members. They may also fail to match pictures with names. However, recognizing a person when his or her voice is heard is usually unimpaired. Prosopagnosia may extend to other familiar stimuli. For instance, a carpenter may fail to recognize his hammer, or a writer may not recognize her own favorite pen.
