agrammatism, jargon
A dominant characteristic of some person with aphasia, agrammatism, is the omission of certain grammatical elements of language. The speech sounds like a telegram, in which articles and other grammatical morphemes are omitted. For example, the plural '-s' inflection, past tense '-ed', articles, conjunctions, and prepositions might be omitted. People with agrammatism speak in short phrases and struggle to say them. Their speech is not fluent. It is full of pauses, repetitions, revisions, and other kinds of dysfluency. Individuals may speak in broken sentences and thus appear to have lost control of the basic structure of their language. The speech lacks the normal patterns of intonation. Relatively fluent but irrelevant or meaningless speech is called jargon in aphasia literature. Although the words do not make much sense, intonation of speech sounds normal. It is the opposite of the fragmented agrammatical speech. The person responds readily to questions, the speech follows the normal syntactic arrangements, the 'sentences' are relatively long, and the expressions are smooth and free flowing. However, the meaning is either irrelevant to the preceding question or totally obscure. There is an example of an irrelevant speech, though it could have been meaningful in response to some other question. The response of another client illustrates the meaningless variety of jargon. Some jargon contains neologistic 'words' created by the person and mixed with already incomprehensible utterances.
