One day when Vaishali Kiran Grover was eleven, she noticed something strange as she was watering her family's papaya tree. There were a lot of empty snail shells at the base of the tree. Vaishali recalled, "I was wondering why there were so many empty shells under this tree but not underneath others." Why did she care about empty snail shells under a tree, you may ask. Well, in addition to her love of flying kites on the beaches of Miami, Florida, Vaishali also loved science. And that's what scientists do; they notice weird things and then wonder about them. Why did shells under a papaya tree matter anyway, you may wonder. Well, Vaishali didn't know why they mattered or if they mattered at all. But like a true scientist, she decided that answering the question was the first step to finding out. Later, she would see if anything could be done with her findings. After some research, Vaishali learned that papayas contain something called papain, which some people use to tenderize meat. She thought that if this papain could make meat soft, maybe it could have something to do with the empty snail shells, too. To test her theory, she made her own bait with papayas in it and left it out for the snails. At the same time, she set out some commercial snail bait made from pesticides. This is another thing scientists do: They experiment. It turns out that her experiment satisfied her curiosity about the empty shells! To her satisfaction, shortly after the snails ate the dried papaya, they became immobilized by the papain in the fruit. As a result, the snails became snail juice. Not only did the papain kill the snails, but it also did it much faster and at less cost than commercial pesticides did. And Vaishali's fruit-based snail bait was much more environmentally friendly than chemical-based pesticides.
