Cloning involves the copying of an adult cell with 2 strands of DNA instead of the regular 1 strand by transferring its nucleus into a new cell that has had its own nucleus taken out. Division is given a kick-start via an electric shock and it starts the process to become an embryo. After some time, embryonic stem cells have been produced that could become a genetic clone of whatever it originally came from. Human cloning, however, is often considered distasteful, even by those who actually do the cloning, as it goes against our understanding that everyone is different but worth the same. Science fiction writers have long written stories of clone armies destroying the human race or being used to allow certain people to live forever even though it had not become a reality until a sheep called Dolly was cloned 25 years ago. Scientists who first explored cloning (somatic cell transfer) have stated that human clones were not the goal or desirable, and their research was meant to be used for other activities: reproductive cloning of livestock to help breeding and therapeutic cloning to treat diseases with grown cells. Cloning humans was never the intention. Only a few labs around the world engage in cloning research now, and it may become even less popular soon due to other developments. Assistant professor of developmental cell biology at Columbia University Dietrich Egli contends that while the innovation of cloning excites people, there are many biological hurdles involved in doing it. And according to Robin Lovell-Badge, a developmental biologist and stem cell scientist at the Francis Crick Institute in London, it hasn't happened yet because there hasn't been a good enough reason put forward for pursuing human cloning.
