A retronym comes from the Latin for backwards, retro and the Greek for name, onuma, and it looks similar to other words such as acronym and homonym. To define a retronym is a little difficult, but the Oxford English Dictionary says that it was invented for something whose original name has evolved into something different by means of technology or other developments. The original term is usually used alongside a new modifying word. Some examples will make this clearer to understand. When the electric guitar was invented, the word guitar was not enough anymore to describe this new object, so the modifying word 'acoustic' was used to identify the original basic guitar. In addition, take the term 'analogue watch.' 'This means the most basic watch that uses hands instead of the more modern digital watch.' Furthermore, 'snail mail' is used to refer to mail sent in the original physical way as opposed to e-mail. Others include birth mother, natural turf, regular coffee, classic Coke and real cream. Another way to express a retronymic object is to double up the term, such as book-book to mean the printed version, volunteer-volunteer to mean a true volunteer that receives no money, wood-wood describes a golf club that is made of wood, and cheese-cheese is real cheese. These terms are usually found in spoken contexts and the first word is emphasized. They are called doubles, clones, or reduplicatives. It is generally thought that William Safire first used a retronym in 1980 in his New York Times column, On Language, in conversation with Frank Mankiewicz, a popular broadcaster and journalist in the US at the time and formerly the press secretary of Robert Kennedy. Since then it has become a fixture in the language of people who watch language changing. When a new retronym appears, it is a clear indicator that something is not used so much anymore. As technology advances, there will be more and more members of this group of objects that have become pretty much obsolete.
