In order to understand what post-humanism is, it's important to start with a definition of what it is departing from. Although it encompasses many philosophical and ethical groups, simply put, humanism is the staunch belief that humans hold inherent value, agency, and moral supremacy. The complete dominance of superstition and religion in Medieval Europe gave rise to a rebellion against it during the Renaissance. Power and control were transferred from religious leaders to logical-thinking individuals. The moral world of our political and social institutions of today is still based on this humanism. Then, in the 1990s, post-humanism emerged as a challenge to the idea that only humans can influence morals. The argument was that technological development will remove humans from their position at the top as it is logically and morally necessary to do so. Post-humanists, aka trans-humanists, point to future bio-medical tech such as implants, bio-hacking, cognitive enhancement, as evidence that humans will not evolve in the way we have up to now. Google chief engineer, Ray Kurzweil, expounding a theory that is prevalent in Silicon Valley, sees known human history ending due to the rapid growth of technological development and a new barely-imagined world appearing instead to replace it. Not all post-humanists share his vision, though. Human and technological mixing won't change humanity as such, but rather it will help humans to make connections with something different from us - machines, according to philosopher Donna Haraway. Human-machine cyborgs will show us the connections we have with non-human things that we have previously rejected.
