The assessment module highlights procedures that are unique to assessing aphasia before making a diagnosis and offering intervention. These procedures help determine the nature and extent of aphasia. Case history, results of neurological and other medical examinations, and careful observation of the person's speech and general behavior are important in determining the nature and extent of aphasia. On most tests, the clinician asks the individual to name a set of pictures, point to a particular picture repeat sentences or phrases, recite the days of the week, describe the use of objects, answer specific questions, read a story and summarize it, and write a few lines. Through these and other tasks, the clinicians evaluates the individual's understanding of spoken speech, naming skills, production of grammatical and syntactic features, speech sound articulation, reading and writing, and other aspects of communication. Based on some test results, the severity of aphasia might be rated as mild, moderate, or severe. Potential areas of brain injury and the type of aphasia may be suggested. Beyond standardized tests and language samples, clinicians use functional assessment tools. Functional assessment concentrates on how an individual with aphasia communicates in everyday situations, including how he or she interacts with health-care workers. Functional assessment tool helps assess how the person communicates in social situations, expresses basic needs, reads and writes, and makes daily planning. Note that such an approach does not emphasize grammatical accuracy of what is said. It is concerned with naturalistic communication in actual social contexts. Assessment identifies the speech, language, reading, and writing skills that are lost or impaired. Assessment results may also suggest a particular type of aphasia. Treatment planning depends on the results of aphasia assessment.
