Sylvia Bloom worked at a law firm as a legal secretary in New York for 67 years. She was known for being unusually thrifty — for example, she always took the subway to work rather than taking a taxi. When she died at the age of 96, it was revealed that she had actually saved up a fortune worth $12 million. Even more surprisingly, she left instructions to donate most of it to charity! Bloom grew up during the Great Depression, so she knew the importance of saving money. She attended public schools as a child and took college courses at night as an adult while working during the day to earn a living. She and her husband Raymond, who passed away in 2002, never had any children, and they lived a comfortable but modest lifestyle. Bloom's niece, Jane Lockshin, believes it is possible that her uncle was completely unaware of the money. This is because Bloom kept it in several bank accounts she had in her own name. But how did a secretary earn so much money? She had a secret. In those days, it was common for secretaries to take care of many of their bosses' personal tasks, including their investments. Bloom used this to her advantage. Whenever Bloom's boss identified a promising stock, he would instruct Bloom to purchase a certain amount on his behalf. When she did, she would also use her own money to buy some of the same stock for herself. She couldn't afford to buy much, due to her small salary, but her strategy still made her a very wealthy woman. In her will, she left a small amount of money for her family. The rest will provide disadvantaged youths with college scholarships. Because of Bloom's clever strategy, many young people from poor families will receive a valuable education.
