Media Issues
As global warming has emerged as an item of media and public interest, more Earth scientists are entering the public arena, which in many instances is not an area for which he or she has particular affinity.
Individual scientists were never trained and for which he or she has no particular affinity.
Perhaps partly as a result, many statements attributed to scientists that appear in the media lack scientific objectivity.
Some of these are misquotes or quotes taken out of context, for instance by eliminating caveats that the scientist carefully explained but that the interviewer felt unnecessarily confused the issue.
In some such cases, the misquoted scientist can become quite frustrated by the process and quite uninclined to speak with the media again.
On the other hand, in other instances, statements lacking scientific objectivity are correctly quoted and are indeed the fault of the scientists.
Like everyone else, scientists can make mistakes.
These can arise because of the scientist's being outright wrong, for such reasons as being overly nervous, being overly desirous not to disappoint an interviewer by discussing caveats and ambiguities, or, most disturbing, wanting too much to make an attention-grabbing statement.
Meanwhile, quite a few stories have been overhyped in a way that successfully gets immediate attention but in the long run impairs the public's confidence in the science and in the press.
One way to avoid contributing to overhyping a story would be to say nothing.
However, that is not a realistic option for scientists who feel a strong sense of responsibility to the public and policymakers and/or to offer suggestions.
Speaking with members of the media has advantages in getting a message out and perhaps receiving favorable recognition, but it runs the risk of misinterpretations, the need for repeated clarifications, and entanglement in never-ending controversy.
Hence, the decision of whether to speak with the media tends to be highly individualized.
