It was Christmas Eve in the year eighteen hundred and seventy. He had made huge' profits from the French prisoners of war in the town. They followed the troops, and sold them bottles of alcohol or bought their watches. Far away, the last red rays of the sun slowly sank below the horizon. Most of Cahn's friends, and his sons, had gone with the army a long time ago. Even the Jews of the old town joined in the celebrations. "He has no love for anyone or anything except the money in his strongbox" people said. What on earth did the old miser want with all this? In a large Bavarian village, everyone was preparing for Christmas Day. He was often seen walking softly through the hospitals and barracks, buying watches, money orders, and medals. And when they found the bodies of dead soldiers, they stole the valuables from their pockets. "And he has no family or friends, only debtors!" Was it possible that he intended to celebrate Christmas? Old Augustus Cahn's eyes had never shined as much as they did that night. Lights began to shine in the windows of houses. The street stalls were covered in flowers, ribbons and branches of green holly. Over his shoulder he carried a little basket covered with a napkin. Did he intend to have a family reunion and drink to the German fatherland? For some, the holy day was only an excuse to drink more to celebrate the triumph of the Bavarian troops. As the day faded and the fog came down, carriages full of tired shoppers drove by ringing their bells. Cahn was too old to follow his sons, so he remained in Bavaria. Many people walked happily along the snow-covered streets. He approached the beds of the wounded soldiers, and asked in a low voice, "Do you have anything to sell?" From under the napkin, the neck of a wine bottle and a twig of holly could be seen. Impossible! But he had no regrets. They entered cook shops, wine booths, and busy stores. Everybody knew that old Cahn had no country.
