John Plummer was an American pilot during the Vietnam War, who helped coordinate a raid on a village called Trang Bang in 1972. The next day, he saw a photo of the raid in a newspaper and was horrified. In that picture, a young girl is running naked from a burning village along a dirt road. Her arms are high in the air and her body has been burned by explosives. He spent the next twenty-four years looking for the girl in the photo. He wanted desperately to tell her that he had not meant to hurt her so terribly. However, he was never able to find her. The longing to apologize slowly destroyed him until he lost his health and his hope. His friends tried to help him, reminding him that he had tried to evacuate innocent people from the area before the attack. However, none of this made him feel less guilty. And then a miracle happened for John on Veterans Day, 1996. He went to the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC with some old friends who were also pilots in the war. They went there to honor their friends who were killed in the war. However, each man also hoped that they could find some relief for their guilt over the terrible things that they had been involved in. They joined a crowd at the Vietnam War Memorial to hear a speech. A small woman took the stage and began speaking. She introduced herself as the girl from the photograph. John was stunned. He had wanted to meet this person for so long. The woman continued, "I'm not bitter, though the burns I got still cause me pain." "I long ago forgave the men who bombed our village." John pushed through the crowd. A security guard tried to stop John, but he couldn't. "It was me!" John shouted, "I am the man who did this to you!" The woman came down from the stage, approached John, and embraced him. He sobbed, "I am so sorry." She told him over and over, "It's okay." "I have forgiven you."
