Realizing what was going on, the lady quickly took the child in her arms. Then, the soldiers took away only the child's mother without another word, "Mommy!" The child cried out in fear. Praying that the soldiers would not hear his desperate cries, the lady held on to the boy with all her might. He was too young to understand what was going on. But his mother, who was arrested, was afraid that the soldiers might take away her son, too. She did not turn around even once. "After that day, I don't know what happened to the Jewish woman. This is my son, who became mine that day." The old lady was silent for a moment, and then she continued. I took him home and named him Tom. I told my husband what had happened and initially, he was shocked but he said it was a sad fate that we couldn't ignore. During the first few days, Tom was frustrated and he kept crying. He also started to display aggressive behavior as he was confused. My husband and I felt sorry for him. I was worried but as the days passed by, the crying periods got shorter. Accepting him as our son, I tried my best to help him cope with the sudden loss he had to endure. Remembering how lovingly his mother looked at him outside the toy shop, I wanted to let him know that he was loved just as much in our home. Nevertheless, he had a tough time accepting me as his new mother. I cared for Tom as if he had always been my son. Sometimes he would respond to my questions or stories, and other times he would just keep quiet. This went on for a few months. It was not an easy time, but I knew that Tom was slowly warming up to me day by day.
