Although children in preschool and the early elementary grades can carry on a conversation with others, sophisticated dialogue is a skill that older children learn over years, and even many adults find it necessary to refine their skills. Conversation and narration are two sets of important social communication skills that take years to master. While conversation is interlocked verbal behaviors of two or more people, narration is the relatively uninterrupted flow of verbal behavior. Conversation is dialogue which is not limited to two individuals, and narration is monologue which is occasionally interrupted by questions or comments from the listeners. Some amount of narration may be part of normal conversation because people tell stories or describe personal experiences as they converse. Elementary and high school students continue to show improvement in a variety of conversational skills. A general trend in the conversational skills of older children, especially adolescents, is an increase in the time spent talking to their peers, mainly because of their increased socialization. Face-to-face or telephone conversations consume a significant amount of socialization in this age group. The amount of time spent socializing is slightly greater for girls than for boys. During the adolescent years, significant differences in conversation between peers versus that with adults deem to emerge. In contrast with conversations with adults, conversations between adolescents tend to include asking more questions, shifting topics more frequently, returning to the old topics, and entertaining the conversational partners. Narration is a more sophisticated skill than conversation. Good narration requires knowledge of the story setting, chronological sequence, characterizations, feelings, and thoughts of the characters, a good beginning and end, and so forth. Significant improvements in narrative skills take place during the school years, partly because of academic demands for narrative speech and writing and partly because of improved reading skills. Children who read well generally narrate stories and experiences well. Although language acquisition concludes with language skills of other children, language learning is a lifelong process. Adults, too, continue to acquire new vocabulary, unfamiliar idioms, metaphors, and proverbs. Adults who wish to improve their writing skills may find that it is an endless process.
