associated clinical condition 2
Finally, although the environment of many children with language disorders is normal, certain environmental factors may be associated with language problems. As potential causes of language disorders in children, social isolation, abuse, or neglect have received attention in recent years. Because language is a form of social behavior, it is reasonable to think that a child must experience affectionate, loving, close, and supportive family, social, and personal relations to acquire language. Physical or social isolation reduces the human contacts that are needed to acquire language. A completely socially isolated child who does not hear human language is unlikely to acquire it. Discovery of non-verbal 'closet children' or children who were reputed to have been reared by wolves of monkeys is sometimes reported. Unfortunately, because many such children have not been studied by scientists, credible data on the effects of isolation on language and social development are limited. Children who are not totally isolated but experience reduced social contacts also may show a slower than normal rate of language acquisition. Such children may be described as socially deprived. Children who are frequently hospitalized for prolonged illness may be somewhat slow in the acquisition of language. Some research has raised the possibility that children who are abused and neglected, especially the latter, may be prone to language delay. It is tempting to conclude that intellectual disabilities, hearing loss, autism, and similar conditions are causes of language disorders. They may be causes in a rough sense. They had no intellectual disabilities, hearing loss, or autism. The child might have mastered his or her language in a typical manner. However, we cannot be sure, because a child without any of these problems also is known to have difficulty mastering language skills. More important, a child who has limited intellectual skills, hearing impairment, or autism has it in addition to a language disorder. These conditions and language disorders coexist. It is difficult to separate the cause from the effect, especially in case of associated congenital organic or genetic problems. Therefore, it is better to describe intellectual disabilities and similar problems as associated conditions and not as causes of the language disorder.
