The one bright spot of terrible tragedies is that they often bring out the very best in people. During the Holocaust, for example, there were countless people who risked their own lives hiding or otherwise shielding Jewish families from the Nazis. One of these people was a man named Eugene Lazowski, a Polish Army doctor. He saved at least 8,000 people from being sent to concentration camps, where they would have likely died. Lazowski decided to use his intellect rather than weapons to resist the invading Nazis. He was actually following in the footsteps of his parents, who used their home to hide two Jewish families. Although Lazowski himself didn't hide anyone in his home, he used his medical expertise to save all the people of a small town, Rozwadow, in an unexpected and novel way. To keep these people safe, he created the appearance of an epidemic, which caused the Nazis to immediately quarantine the area. He did this by injecting dead epidemic typhus bacteria into the local people. A friend of his had previously discovered that doing so would cause people to test positive for epidemic typhus without actually causing any of its symptoms. As the Germans feared this deadly and highly contagious disease, infected individuals were not sent to concentration camps. After some time, the Nazis grew suspicious and a group of soldiers was sent to investigate the doctor. Rather than panicking, he greeted the soldiers with food and drinks. The superior officer was so pleased with this hospitality that he only sent two younger soldiers to check on the patients. Scared of being infected, they quickly took some blood without investigating any further. When the blood samples tested positive for epidemic typhus, Lazowski knew he had succeeded.
