It's always been easy for me to start up a conversation with a stranger. Likewise, other people seem to find it very easy to talk to me. I enjoy these little conversations, and it just seems polite to listen to what others have to say. I usually don't expect to learn valuable lessons from these brief encounters, but one of them did have an important impact on me. I was on a long flight, and I was sitting in the aisle seat. Next to me in the middle seat was an elderly woman. Even before we took off, she was cheerfully telling me about her life. She talked about her successful kids, the cost of seeing her doctor, and even her dislike for rap music. I learned about her past career, and she even talked to me about her late husband, whom she missed dearly. The conversation left me feeling good. Eventually, the woman fell asleep, and I asked a flight attendant for a blanket to cover her. Then, the gentleman sitting in the window seat smiled at me and said, "I bet your parents are proud of you." It was a nice thing for him to say, but I didn't quite understand what he meant. "You're looking after a complete stranger," he said. "But you've done something much more important than just get a blanket for her." "You listened to her stories." "Just by listening, you've made her feel special." I was surprised to hear the man say this. And that's when I realized something very important. I wanted to get home as soon as possible. It had been a very long time since I had actually listened to my own mother. I was always telling her about my life, my job, the places I was traveling to, and many other things just about myself. I forgot that there was a special person whom I needed to listen to as well.
