1) There is a very old story involving a man trying to fix his broken boiler. 2) Despite his best efforts over many months, he can't do it. 3) Eventually, he gives up and decides to call in an expert. 4) The engineer arrives, gives one gentle tap on the side of the boiler, and it springs to life. 5) The engineer gives a bill to the man, and the man argues that he should pay only a small fee as the job took the engineer only a few moments. 6) The engineer explains that the man is not paying for the time he took to tap the boiler but rather the years of experience involved in knowing exactly where to tap. 7) Just like the expert engineer tapping the boiler, effective change does not have to be timeconsuming. 8) In fact, it is often simply a question of knowing exactly where to tap. 9) Most of us are suspicious of rapid cognition. 10) We believe that the quality of the decision is directly related to the time and effort that went into making it. 12) "Haste makes waste." 13) "Look before you leap." 11) That's what we tell our children. 14) "Stop and think." 15) "Don't judge a book by its cover." 16) We believe that we are always better off gathering as much information as possible and spending as much time as possible in careful consideration. 17) But there are moments, particularly in timedriven, critical situations, when haste does not make waste, when our snap judgments and first impressions can offer better means of making sense of the world. 18) Survivors have somehow learned this lesson and have developed and sharpened their skill of rapid cognition. 19) In 1995, a group of high school students in Miner County, South Dakota, started planning a revival. 20) They wanted to do something that might revive their dying community.
