MINI TEST 03 - 4~5번
Herring gull chicks are small, brown, and cannot fly. Since they are totally dependent on their mothers for survival, they have a powerful instinct to ask for food. Whenever they see their mother's beak, they peck at it to say they want to be fed. However, the strength of this reaction can be deliberately increased. If the chicks are shown a wooden stick with a red dot that resembles the beak of a mother herring gull, they also peck at the fake beak. If the chicks see a wooden stick with three red dots, they peck much faster. In other words, when the characteristics of the mother's beak are simplified and exaggerated, it creates a more dramatic response. This is called the peak shift effect, since the peak reaction is triggered by a shifted stimulus. According to this concept, the stronger a stimulus is, the stronger its effect is as well. Based on this idea, a famous neuroscientist explained the core principles of visual art. He argued that a wide variety of art uses "deliberate exaggeration." Artists use exaggerated colors and figures in their work to trigger stronger reactions from viewers. One relevant example is Munch's famous painting The Scream. When viewers see the image, it gives them an indelible impression because it depicts a very exaggerated expression of fear. In contrast, if we look at an ordinary landscape painting of a realistic natural scene, we quickly forget about the feeling it gives us. Based on this premise, we could argue that an artist's job is taking ordinary forms and making them more stimulating.
