Honduras is a small country in Central America, where many children are poor, homeless, parentless, and in need. This is where Betty, along with 18 of her peers, had committed to spending two weeks of their summer vacation. They had to take a malaria pill every week for eight weeks and get many kinds of vaccines before departing. They were told to bring old clothes, flashlights, bug repellent, and an open heart. Betty thought the last item was the most important because the trip was not the vacation most teens dream of. It was sponsored by their school principal, who had volunteered there a few years ago. Two weeks in Honduras was never easy. They spent their time with children at an orphanage, relying solely on bare necessities. The heat was often unbearable, and the smell of raw sewage was constant. Dirt clung to everything, and they had to close their eyes and hold their breath to shower in the contaminated water. However, the children won their hearts. While spending time with the children, they enjoyed every moment. The children were so friendly and unselfish that it was impossible not to love them. It was their job to repaint the boys' room and the hard iron bunk beds. They washed and braided the girls' hair and painted their nails. Two weeks elapsed in this way. When the time to part came, they exchanged hugs, kisses, and eventually goodbyes with the kids. They came home different—better. They learned that the best feeling of all is the joy of giving something to others. Betty feels lucky that she learned this early, and she knows that she can make a difference.
