Lesson 4. Find and Do What You Love(1)
Even the wisest intellectuals of the ancient era had some mistaken beliefs. One of these beliefs was spontaneous generation. This was a theory that claimed that some living things were born from nonliving things. For instance, many people thought that maggots were born from rotting meat. The greatest scientists and philosophers of this time supported this idea. Then, in the 17th century, Italian scientist Francesco Redi tried to disprove spontaneous generation. In an experiment, he placed pieces of meat in glass jars. Some jars were left open, while the others were closed with lids. Soon, maggots appeared in the open jars, but no maggots emerged from the meat in the closed jars. This was because the meat in the open jars had attracted flies, which had laid eggs on the meat. From this experiment, Redi concluded that maggots were not spontaneously generated. This was one of the earliest demonstrations that disproved spontaneous generation. Not long after this, in the 18th century, the microscope was developed enough to be used in scientific study. This allowed researchers to see what had been too small to see before. For the first time, scientists saw tiny organisms in water or other liquids that would normally have been viewed as lifeless. By the 19th century, the reproduction of microscopic organisms was easily observable, and could be done in a lab. Louis Pasteur, a famous scientist of this period, showed that dust particles could carry bacteria around, which proved that life was giving birth to new life even in the air around us. In short, life comes not from lifeless things but only from other life. After 400 years of experimentation and observation, this has become the accepted and modern theory. It is just one example of how the scientific method allows human understanding of the natural world to become more accurate as time goes on.
