A story is told of an auction where some of the finest china, linens, and other items of great value were being sold. All of the items sold rapidly. But at the end of the auction, the auctioneer offered an old, weather-beaten violin. Without any additional explanation, he placed it onto the table. It looked like a plain violin, only a little dirty. Compared with the other valuable items, it looked much cheaper and poorer in quality. Upon first notice, those in attendance laughed at the out-of-place object. "What's the bid?" the auctioneer asked. A woman said, "I'll give you two dollars." A man yelled, "I'll take it off your hands for five dollars." Still another man shouted, "Ten dollars, and this is a really generous bid!" After about ten seconds, the auctioneer raised his hammer to close the bidding. Just then an elderly man got up, walked slowly to the front, and picked up the old violin. He asked the auctioneer if he could try playing it. The auctioneer looked a little surprised, but he accepted the elderly man's request. The elderly man pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket and began to rub the instrument. As he rubbed, the violin began to shine. He then began to pluck the strings and turn the pegs to tune it. He placed the violin in position and began to play the familiar spiritual "Amazing Grace." When he finished playing, the man gave the violin back to the auctioneer and walked slowly back to his seat. There wasn't a dry eye in the place. Finally the auctioneer composed himself and reopened the bidding. Someone bid five hundred dollars, another bid a thousand. That violin sold that day for nine thousand dollars! Someone who had been half asleep in the back room throughout the proceedings asked what made the difference. A woman answered that when the old man played he put everyone in the spirit. When we place ourselves in tune with the spirit, we give our lives new meaning.
