The Institute of Personality Assessment and Research at the University of California, Berkeley, conducted a series of experiments on the nature of creativity. The researchers attempted to identify the most creative people and then determine what made them different from everybody else. They put together a list of scientists, engineers, and writers who had made major contributions and conducted a number of tests on them. Then the researchers did something similar with others from the same jobs whose contributions were less creative. One of the most interesting findings was that the more creative people tended to be shy and quiet. They were interpersonally skilled but not of an especially sociable nature. They thought of themselves as independent and individualistic. As teens, many had been shy and avoided the spotlight. These findings don't mean that those who spend more time alone are always more creative than those who are more social, but they do suggest that in a group of people who have been especially creative throughout their lifetimes, you will probably find a lot of quiet individuals who enjoy solitude from time to time. It is definitely true that solitude can be an accelerator to innovation. Spending time alone focuses the mind on the tasks in hand, and stops wasting energy on other matters unrelated to work. In other words, if you're in the backyard sitting beneath a tree while everyone else is having a party, you're more likely to have an apple fall on your head.
