Steen and Peder Mondrup were born in Copenhagen in 1980. Peder, due to a lack of oxygen during birth, spent most of his life in a wheelchair. Nevertheless, the twin brothers have always shared a tight bond. While preparing for a half marathon, Steen remembered seeing a video in which Dick Hoyt completed triathlons with his son, who had cerebral palsy, like Peder. Knowing how often his brother felt discouraged, he suggested they could compete in a half-marathon race north of Copenhagen together. Peder quickly agreed. The twin brothers completed the race, with Peder in a racing wheelchair, which was as physically demanding for him as Steen's exertion from his running. Completing the half marathon was an incredibly rewarding experience for them. The experience gave Peder a whole new sense of identity and created "a space where I could be free from my disability," he said. Steen and Peder couldn't stop there. They decided to try for that most extreme challenge: the Ironman Triathlon. They trained hard for the 2014 Copenhagen Ironman. For the swimming leg of the race, Steen swam 3.8 km while pulling Peder in a specially designed rubber boat. Then, they completed the bike leg on a custom-made bicycle before they completed the marathon, just as they had in the half marathon the year before. As well as working on his personal endurance, Peder became the 'brains' of the team, keeping Steen aware of the time, telling him when they needed to accelerate or could afford to slow down a little, and reminding him to drink water from time to time. The Mondrup brothers finished the Ironman triathlon race together in under 16 hours. They soon realised the positive impact the training for the race had on Peder. Being outside in the fresh air and the ability to take part in events alongside others allowed him to forget his handicap and enjoy competing with his brother. Wanting to share this experience with others, they started Team Tvilling, a sports project where able-bodied runners and wheelchair athletes can meet once a week and enjoy a run together.
