Hermann Flohn, born in Frankfurt-am-Main on February 19, 1912, was a German meteorologist and climatologist who devised a widely used climate classification. He was educated at the Universities of Frankfurt and Innsbruck, earning degrees in meteorology, geography, geophysics, and geology. After working for a few months at the University of Marburg, in 1935 he joined the state weather service in Berlin. During the war, he served in the air force meteorological service and became a prisoner of war. After the war, he joined the German weather service at Bad Kissingen. From 1952 to 1961, he was head of research at the weather service. From 1961 to 1977, he was a professor at the University of Bonn and director of the Meteorological Institute. After his retirement in 1977, he was made professor emeritus, but continued to head research projects. The last of these investigated large-scale climate forecasting and its environmental significance and was conducted for the North Rhine-Westphalia Academy of Science. Flohn died in Bonn on June 23, 1997.
