A number of years back, my six-year-old son and I had gone shopping at one of those discount toy stores with toys piled to the ceiling. We had just come around the corner of an aisle when I saw a young, long-haired, bearded man in a wheelchair. He must have been in some terrible accident because both his legs were missing and his face was badly scarred. Just then, my six-year-old saw him too and said in a loud voice, "Look at that man, Dad!" while pointing at him. I did the normal parent thing and tried to shush my son. But my son broke free from my hand and ran down the aisle to the man in the wheelchair. He stood right in front of the man and said in a loud voice, "What a cool earring!" "Where did you get such a neat earring?" Hearing what my son said, he looked startled at first. But soon, the young man broke into a wide grin that lit up his face. He was so taken aback by the compliment that he just glowed with happiness, and the two of them talked for a while about his earring and other "cool stuff." It made a life-long impression on me. For I had seen only a horribly scarred man in a wheelchair, but my six-year-old saw a man with a cool earring. As we left the store that day, my son chatted cheerfully about the "cool dude" and told me how he wanted an earring just like his. I glanced back at the man. He was still there, giving us a wave and a smile that glowed with warmth. In that moment, I realized my child had taught me something profound. He looked beyond the visible scars and saw a person — vibrant, interesting, and worthy of admiration. It was a reminder that beauty and kindness aren't diminished by hardship; often, they shine brighter through it.
