Ways to use to MOOCs advance your career Those who start a massive open online course (MOOC) mostly do not finish it. In fact, a majority don't even make it halfway through the material. This is put forward as proof that MOOCs are not doing what they claimed to do and people are being ripped off, but for this to be true, a student must complete 100% of a semester's online work to truly get value from it. This is most certainly not true; you just need to carefully manage your goals and time to get the most out of MOOCs and not waste your money. You might want to aim for receiving a certificate and for this you have to complete all of the set coursework and pay your money. Every week for a substantial period of time, you need to do quite a few hours of work to get a certificate from companies, such as Coursera, ed, and Udacity, and when you finally complete it, you can add the certificate to your resume. You can also try to audit a course for free. This involves watching all the videos that are assigned but not doing the set assignments. Of course, you will not receive that certificate we talked about before and you might be prevented from fully accessing the quizzes and other materials. But you don't have the stress of finishing all the work and you can take your time working your way through everything. An even less stressful option might be to just commit to sampling a course. You can watch videos when you want and glean from them what you need. One example of this is if you wanted to do some regression modeling in Excel. You would have the option of finding that information from another source but the best place to go would be a MOOC as the material is better. You would have a better handle on your time by avoiding the lessons in a statistics course that are not pertinent to you and focusing only on the one that is.
