The glass escalator While there has been a multitude of research done on how women are thought of and treated negatively when they enter male-dominated jobs, there is not much evidence about the other side-when men enter female-dominated jobs. A member of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) has discovered a phenomenon that she has called the "glass escalator". In this, when men defy their gender norms, they are actually rewarded. Samantha Morris, an associate I-O psychologist at MillerCorps, explained that, as we are all aware, the glass ceiling exists for women who have chosen to pursue a career that is not traditionally associated with their gender. Yet, what about men who chose a job that is not considered to be typically male? You might think that the same glass ceiling exists for men, but you would be wrong. Not only are they not thought of or treated negatively, but they are actually viewed more positively than women in female-dominated jobs. Promotions will come more quickly to them and in front of women who are just as worthy. So, this glass escalator was studied by Morris even further, and she discovered that it was indeed partly true that men were treated more favorably than women instead of being disparaged as women are. This is often due to the fact that men are seen as unusual in these professions and therefore stand out from the crowd, whereas women are seen as the norm and often face discrimination and bias as a result.
