A link between mental health and gun violence A new report claims that news stories about violence often mention mental health has played a part even though the majority of people with mental illnesses are not violent. Mental illness is only involved in about 4% of interpersonal violence in the US; however, almost 40% of the violence in the news is linked to mental illness. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reports that people with severe mental illness are ten times more likely to be victims of violent crime than those without. The report, written by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health researchers and published in the journal Health Affairs, analyzed 400 news articles that were published from 1994 to 2014. 55% of the articles talked about violence and almost 40% of that violence was against other people. 29% of the articles and TV segments discussed the link between mental illness and suicide; moreover, there was a significant increase from 9% in the time period 1994~2005 to 22% in 2005~2014 of a mass shooter being described as having a mental illness. When mental illness and violence against others were discussed in the news stories, the view that violence is increased when mental illness is involved was put forward about 40% of the time, while only 8% of news stories stated that people with mental illnesses are mostly not violent. The most commonly mentioned illness was schizophrenia. The conclusion of the study was that mass shooters do not always have a diagnosed mental illness, but rather they have emotional issues such as anger problems that make them mentally unhealthy.
